There are many substances that can go down our drains without any issue. This is a big convenience that comes from using the drain. Unfortunately, there are certain substances that simply don’t do well within your home’s piping system. Today, we’re going to discuss what shouldn’t go down your drains so you can protect your home’s plumbing system.
Grease
Grease might start off as a liquid, and this makes it seem like it would go down the drain without an issue. As it cools, however, this grease will begin to harden, making it a big problem for your pipes. That’s why, instead, you should wait for the grease to cool before disposing of it. Also, when you dispose of grease, put it in the trash instead of trying to send it down the drain.
Coffee Grounds
Leftover coffee grounds are not meant to go down your drains either. While it’s possible that a tiny number of grounds could fit in them, if you repeatedly pour them into your drains, they will accumulate over time. Eventually, there will be enough coffee grounds in your pipes to cause a blockage. Instead, you want to scoop out leftover coffee grounds and dispose of them somewhere else.
“Flushable” Wipes
Some wipes might be advertised as being “flushable”. Just because people say this, however, that doesn’t mean the wipes will break down very easily. It’s possible that these wipes could clog up your plumbing system if you put them into your pipes. Instead, you’ll want to put them in the trash, just to be safe.
Paper Products
There is only one type of paper that should ever go down your drains: toilet paper. Toilet paper is specially designed to go into your pipes because it breaks down easily in water. Other kinds of paper, on the other hand, don’t break down as easily. These papers include cotton balls and paper towels, and they can absorb quite a bit of water, which will cause your pipes to become clogged.
