A pipe burst is a serious problem for any person’s home. It can cause stains in the walls of your home, and bring about water leakage. If left unaddressed, water damage can run rampant throughout your house. That’s why you need to act quickly if your pipes ever end up bursting. Here is what you should do if your home experiences a pipe burst.
Shut Your Electricity and Water Down Immediately
If you ever get a burst pipe in your home, you should shut down your water immediately. This will stop the water damage from escalating any further. Usually, the water shut-off valve will be found in either your crawlspace or basement. It could also be nearby your water heater tank. If you can see the broken pipe, make note of its location so you can tell your plumber as soon as they show up.
You should also shut down the electricity while you’re at it. Electric currents don’t go well with water, so it’s smart to turn off electrical circuits until the plumbing situation can be sorted out. Only the circuits near your busted pipe need to be turned off, but you can turn them all off if you’re not sure where your circuits are located.
Contact a Plumber
After turning off the water and electricity, further damage to your home should be prevented. This means you can start taking measures towards fixing the problem, and problems like these are best handled by a professional plumber. Plumbers have years of experience handling these sorts of situations, so they’ll have no trouble fixing any pipe burst your home may experience.
Remove Standing Water
While you wait for a plumber to arrive, you can remove standing water around your home. You can collect water by using towels or a mop. For large amounts of water, a wet shop vacuum might be needed instead.
If you think there’s sewage in the vicinity, don’t risk your health trying to get rid of it. Instead, wait for your plumber to arrive, and they’ll determine the safest course of action to take.
You can also run a dehumidifier in order to accelerate the drying process. This also helps stop mold from developing.
