Toilets are some of the most frequently-used appliances in our homes. Given how often toilets are used, they need to be properly maintained so that they’re always ready and available. Today, we’ll be reviewing some toilet maintenance tasks you can follow to keep your toilet up and running.
Inspect the Inner Workings
One part of toilet maintenance you should follow is to check on your toilet’s inner components to make sure that they’re still functioning normally. This is something that’s best done every 6 months or so.
To start, remove the tank lid from the top, and then flush your toilet. See if the flapper is entirely sealed. You should also check on the angle stops, which can be done by turning it off and then on again.
See If the Wax Ring Needs Replacing
Another part of your toilet maintenance routine should involve replacing the wax ring. This ring needs to be replaced roughly every 4 or 5 years. When this wax ring goes bad, you’ll start noticing a sewer-like odor. This is your sign that the wax ring needs replacing.
See If Your Tank Has Any Leaks
It’s also a good idea to check if your tank has any leaks. You can actually use food coloring to make the inspection process simpler for yourself. Simply put a couple of drops of food coloring into your tank. After about half an hour, take a look inside the toilet bowl. If there’s colored water inside of the bowl, this is indicative of a tank leak. It’s best to call a professional plumber to fix this sort of problem.
Listen for Noises After You’ve Flushed
Do you hear any humming or squealing sounds after you’ve flushed your toilet? Squealing sounds could indicate high water pressure. This can damage your toilet, as well as other plumbing fixtures in your home. Ideally, your water pressure should be around 55 to 60 PSI. If it’s out of this range, call a plumber to get your water pressure levels back to normal.
