How to Deal With a Toilet That’s Always Running
Today, we’ll be exploring causes and solutions for a toilet that’s constantly running.

Have you ever had an instance in which your toilet runs continuously? Not only is it bothersome, but it also wastes a whole lot of water, which can affect your water bill. Resolving this issue is of utmost importance, but there are many different reasons why this problem could happen. This results in a lot of potential solutions as well. Today, we’ll be exploring causes and solutions for a toilet that’s constantly running.

The Toilet Handle is Stuck or Broken

Does your toilet handle feel like it’s a little bit loose? Maybe it’s the complete opposite, and it’s instead stuck in place. Either way, this can prevent the flushing mechanism from properly resetting. As a result, continuous running can occur. By replacing the handle, you can restore your toilet’s flushing function back to normal.

Problematic Flapper Seal

For those who don’t know, the flapper seal is the rubber component along the bottom of your tank. It holds in water until you flush the toilet. As time passes, this seal can get worn down, which causes water to leak from the tank and go into the bowl. Much like with the handle, if your flapper seal ever gets damaged, you’ll want to have it replaced to get your toilet up and running (non-continuously) again.

The Toilet’s Float Height is Misadjusted

The float height is what regulates the amount of water that fills up the tank after you’ve flushed. Whenever this float is put to too high a level, it can result in the water overflowing, and going inside of the tank’s overflow tube. When water gets in the overflow tube, constant running can occur.

Your Fill Valve is Leaky

The fill valve is what regulates water flow going into your tank. When that valve leaks, you’ll typically notice it because you’ll probably hear water trickling into the bowl from the tank. Sometimes, this problem can be resolved by getting the valve tightened. In other instances, a replacement valve may be needed. This should be discussed with a plumber to determine the best course of action for you.
