A lot of plumbing issues we encounter tend to be related to cold weather. That doesn’t mean that heat can’t be a problem, however. In fact, our drains and sewers can also be heavily impacted whenever temperatures spike. Today, we’re going to go over ways in which our drains and sewers can be affected by heat.
Expanding and Contracting
Like many other materials, drain and sewer pipes will start expanding and contracting in response to temperature fluctuations. When there is an extended amount of exposure to high temperatures, your pipes can expand a notable amount, especially when those pipes are made from materials like clay or plastic. If this expansion happens too abruptly, your pipes can start cracking or rupturing.
Changes in Water Pressure
When the weather gets hot enough, you may also find that your sewer system experiences alterations in water pressure. In the summertime, there are typically more activities that involve water. It could be enjoying a swimming pool. Maybe people take showers more frequently in the summer. Your lawn and garden could need more water whenever the weather heats up. With all of this extra water usage, your drains and pipes could expand more. This can raise the pressure within your pipes, exacerbating any blockages that may be inside of them.
Impact on Your Sewer Lines
Your sewer lines can also be impacted by high temperatures. When there’s enough heat building up within your sewer lines, it can cause the sewer line materials to start drying out and cracking. This increases the chances of your sewer lines experiencing blockages and leakage in the future.
Trees can also impact these sewer lines. If tree roots are searching for moisture, and your pipes are weak enough to be penetrated, tree roots could go right through your sewer lines and cause significant damage to your plumbing system.
