Cleaning Mold and Mildew

Having mold spores in the air is terrible for everyone’s health, especially those with asthma or other lung conditions. Thankfully, cleaning small molded areas is a simple job

When moisture builds up in spots you don’t normally get to clean; you’ll probably start to see mildew or mold growing. Having mold spores in the air is terrible for everyone’s health, especially those with asthma or other lung conditions. Thankfully, cleaning small molded areas is a simple job, and it is safe to do on your own as long as you protect yourself with gloves and eyewear.

Mold Cleaning Solution

One of the best cleaning agents for mold removal is simple white distilled vinegar. The acetic acid content wipes out the spores to stop current mold and prevent future growth. It will also do wonders for that damp, unpleasant smell as it evaporates. An effective mold cleaning solution will be one part water and one part white vinegar. A spray bottle is best for application. If the vinegar smell is too unpleasant as you mix the solution and you don’t want to deal with it, a few drops of essential oil can cut through the odor.

Technique

For areas that have been molding for quite some time, you should saturate the growth with the vinegar solution and then let it sit for 30 minutes to an hour to ensure that you’ve addressed the roots of the problem. If any spores are left behind, then they’ll just multiply all over again. For smooth surfaces, wiping the solution off with a wet sponge should be plenty effective. On rough surfaces like grout, you may want to use a hard-bristled scrub brush to really get the job done. After you’re done, dispose of any and all cleaning instruments in one plastic bag to stop mold spreading to other areas in your home.

Prevention

If mold is a recurring issue in your home, you probably want to look into more extensive prevention methods. If your basement floods, a sump pump will take care of that issue with ease. If you have leaky fixtures in any bathrooms or the kitchen, then the best course of action is to call an expert plumber to find and address the source of those leaks.
