Lesser-Known Ways to Address Clogged Drains

Keep reading to find out some lesser-known ways to clear clogged drains.

Persistent clogs in your home are frustrating and likely to make your life more difficult. So, if you have issues with your kitchen sink or shower draining slowly, it is best to address the problem as soon as possible. However, too many people try to unclog their drain without using the right tools or techniques. Keep reading to find out some lesser-known ways to clear clogged drains.

Plunger

A plunger is an inexpensive tool everyone has in their bathroom and is great for minor clogs, often found in the toilet. Plungers are perfect for a quick job that requires a few thrusts. However, it might be a good idea to disinfect the plunger before using it anywhere besides the toilet.

If you are plunging a bathtub or sink drain, remove the stopper within the drains if possible. Then run the water for a few seconds to build up some standing water in the tub or sink basin. This will provide some extra force to work against the clog. Use your hands or a towel to cover overflow holes in the tub or sink to focus as much pressure as possible into the drain.

Drain Snake

A drain snake is a metal rope or cable with a cutting blade on the end. A drain snake is ideal for removing hair from a drain, which can be hard to remove with chemical cleaners. You can also rent a drain snake from your local hardware store if you do not have your own. For really big blockages, such as a clog in your floor drain, you may need a power auger with a cable that’s at least 50 feet long. For other jobs, a smaller auger will do the trick. It requires extending the snake-like device through the pipe and twisting it through the accumulated junk.

Wet Vacuum

The power of a wet vacuum is often enough to draw the clogged material up and out of the drains. Check the bag for grease or hair to identify the source of the blockage. A wet vacuum can also work well when recovering jewelry or small items from a drain.
