Normally, when you flush your toilet, you expect the water to run briefly and then stop. Sometimes, however, the water might not stop running. If you constantly hear running water, it could indicate various issues, and we’re here to review some of the potential causes with you today. Here are some of the reasons why a toilet might keep running continuously.
The Flapper is Worn Out or Misaligned
In many cases, toilets will keep running as a result of a flapper that’s been damaged, or is no longer properly aligned. The flapper is meant to regulate water flow to the bowl. Without proper sealing, water will flow continuously, and you’ll either need to readjust the flapper, or replace it.
The Fill Valve is Defective
Another common problem that toilets might face is defective fill valves. A fill valve is designed to regulate your tank’s water levels. When something is wrong with this valve, it will either not fill the tank enough, or it will keep filling the tank constantly, resulting in an endless cycle of water that’s always running.
You should inspect your fill valve to see if it has any leaking or malfunctioning issues. If the damage is too great, you will probably need to get this valve replaced.
There are Problems With the Float Ball
The float ball is tasked with shutting off your toilet’s fill valve after the tank has gotten to a specific water level. If this float ball gets misaligned or damaged, it keeps the tank from filling up to the right level. If the tank isn’t able to get to the right water level, it will result in your toilet constantly running. Just like with the flapper and the fill valve, you’ll want to readjust your float ball, or get it replaced if it’s too damaged.
