What to Avoid Putting Down Your Drains

What to Avoid Putting Down Your Drains
There are certain products that you shouldn’t put down your drains, and we’re going to go over them with you today.

No one wants to experience clogged drains, as they’re a bother for anyone who has them. They make it harder for your plumbing system to properly drain water, and they could become expensive to fix, depending on the severity of the issue. One cause of clogging is due to putting the wrong things down your drains. There are certain products that you shouldn’t put down your drains, and we’re going to go over them with you today.

Grease

It’s not uncommon for people to think that they can pour grease down a kitchen drain. After all, liquid grease goes down the pipes smoothly, so it seems like this wouldn’t be an issue. The problem, however, is that grease doesn’t remain a liquid forever. Instead, it will solidify and harden once it’s inside of your pipes. Once grease has solidified, it will start to obstruct your pipes and cause issues. That’s why you should wait for grease to harden, and then throw it in the trash instead.

Coffee Grounds

After your morning coffee, you may have some leftover coffee grounds, and it’s tempting to pour these down the drain. While a few coffee grounds seem harmless enough for your pipes, it becomes a problem when coffee grounds are repeatedly poured down your drains. Eventually, they’ll accumulate enough to create a blockage. That’s why you should, instead, take the coffee grounds from your K cup, scoop them out, and throw them away. You might even be able to use them as a sort of fertilizer for plants that you have.

“Flushable” Wipes

The term “flushable” is misleading, as many wipes that are advertised as “flushable” will not actually break down properly in water. Instead, they will accumulate in your pipes and eventually cause them to clog. That’s why these types of wipes are best put into your standard trash in order to maximize safety.
