Causes of Pipe Corrosion

Causes of Pipe Corrosion
Here are some of the reasons why pipe corrosion might occur in your home.

Pipe corrosion is a serious plumbing problem for any person’s home. It can be a great expense to repair, and it can compromise the functionality of your pipes. It’s important to know the potential causes of pipe corrosion so that you can take measures to prevent them. Here are some of the reasons why pipe corrosion might occur in your home.

pH Imbalances

pH is a metric by which we judge how acidic or basic a substance is. The pH scale ranges from 0-14, with smaller numbers having more acidity, and higher numbers being more basic. When it comes to pipe corrosion, this is caused when water has a high acidity rating (low pH level). The greater the acidity of the water, the more those acids will eat away at your pipes.

Oxidation

The water that goes through our pipes undergoes an oxidation procedure. This oxygen can cause damage to your pipes, and it often results in three potential outcomes. Sometimes, the rust that develops will make pipe surfaces uneven, which increases the chances of water impurities getting trapped and accumulating within your pipes over time. There’s also the chance that your pipes will get thinner. This can eventually cause the piping to crack. Finally, brittle rust can cause pinhole cracks to form in your pipes. This sets your pipes up to burst if they’re put under sufficient pressure.

Hard Water

Hard water refers to when water has more minerals than it should. This is something you can see when your tap has mineral buildup on it. You might also notice hard water if your skin is dry after you’ve taken a shower. These minerals also have the unfortunate side effect of damaging your pipes. With enough minerals in your water, these minerals can cause blockages in your plumbing system, as well as other corrosive problems.
