How to Tell Your Water Heater is Aging

How to Tell Your Water Heater is Aging
Here are signs that your water heater is starting to age.

Every home is going to need a functional water heater. If you don’t have one, tasks like washing dishes and showering become a lot more bothersome. Because of this, it’s important to detect early signs of aging with your current water heater. That way, you can get a replacement done quickly, and avoid being without one for an extended period of time. Here are signs that your water heater is starting to age.

It Shows in the Expiration Date

Your water heater’s expiration date will give you a good indicator for how much longer it should last you. You can find this expiration date by searching up the serial numbers on your manufacturer’s sticker, which can be found close to the top of your unit. Oftentimes, the first two of these numbers will represent your unit’s expiration year. Water heaters that are over 10 years old will likely need to get replaced.

Your Water Heater is Struggling to Provide Heat

A common indicator of problems with your water heater is when your unit isn’t putting out hot water. Maybe the last shower you took was colder than you were expecting it to be. If something like this occurs, there are many potential reasons as to why. There might be rusting or leaking that’s affecting your water heater, or there’s sediment accumulating within the tank. Either way, replacing your unit with a new one is likely going to be the best course of action to take.

You’re Hearing Odd Noises

Water heater tanks will accumulate sediment over time. As this sediment begins to heat up, it will proceed to harden. This uses up a lot of your heater’s energy. As a result, you might start to hear rumbling sounds coming from your unit. This is a strong sign that you’ll want to check the condition of your unit, and see if it needs to be replaced.
