Debunking Myths About Plastic Piping

Debunking Myths About Plastic Piping
Today, we’ll be debunking some of the misconceptions that revolve around plastic piping.

Are you in the process of getting a new piping system for your home? If you are, then you’ll likely be choosing between two piping materials: metal and plastic. Plastic is the newer of the two materials. This means that some people will be unfamiliar with plastic pipes, and this causes certain myths to arise. Today, we’ll be debunking some of the misconceptions that revolve around plastic piping.

“Plastic Pipes are Untested”

Plastic pipes might be the newer of the piping materials, but they’ve still existed for over 75 years. Before these pipes are made available to customers, they go through a series of safety tests that simulate how they’ll need to function once they’re installed. These tests are done in a variety of different conditions, and over an extended period of time. This way, should these plastic pipes thrive during testing, they will likely thrive wherever they’re installed.

“Plastic Piping Makes Drinking Water Dangerous”

News reports have been made regarding BPA inside of plastic water bottles. This shouldn’t deter you from installing plastic pipes, however. Plastic pipes don’t have any BPA in them. In fact, they’re made from entirely different materials, and they undergo a completely different manufacturing and testing process. They’ve been certified to satisfy performance requirements, while also satisfying safe drinking water requirements as well.

“Plastic Piping Will Leach Chemicals”

It’s understandable to suspect that plastic pipes could leach chemicals. Fortunately, plastic piping doesn’t have this issue. There’s a belief that plastics are made with chemical compounds that allow chemicals to transfer into your drinking water.

In reality, those chemical compounds are actually polymers, which don’t leach at all. On top of that, plastic pipes are highly durable, and they’re designed to handle everything from well water to chlorinated water. Some variants of plastic piping are even able to endure high temperatures too.
