4 Ways to Prepare Your Home’s Plumbing for Fall

4 Ways to Prepare Your Home’s Plumbing for Fall

Is your home’s plumbing ready for the upcoming fall season? If it isn’t, then it’s time to get started on it before it’s too late!

Fall is coming soon! In a little over a month, the autumn equinox will happen and the seasons will officially change. Once August ends and rolls into September, though, we will be in fall — even though the temperatures outside might not agree. Is your home’s plumbing ready for the switch? If it isn’t, then it’s time to get a jump on it before it’s too late!

Put Away Outdoor Hoses

Find all of the outdoor hoses that are hanging around in your yard. Run them to get rid of any residual water and then shut them off. After that, unplug them from their spigots; it’s time to put them away for the season. Besides, watering your lawn doesn’t have to be as pressing during the cooler months of fall. Reset the sprinklers so they won’t kick on and then turn off without your input. Plus, hose casings can be damaged by colder weather, and you don’t want that to happen! Just like pipes, they can burst.

Add Insulation to Faucets

Once you have taken care of that, it’s time to think about your faucets. Take the time to insulate them properly. Store-bought kits can help make this process much easier. By doing this, you can reduce the chances of water damage affecting your home’s plumbing during fall and winter later this year.

Drain Out the Water Heater

Cooling season is drawing to a close, and heating season is on its way. That means you’ve got to turn your attention to the heater. Draining out the heater is essential, especially if you need to remove any water that lingers in it. Your water heater will be able to run more efficiently, and ensure that you have all the hot water you want for those chilly days where a warm shower can help you chase away the cold.

Inspect the Pressure Valves

The last step is to pay attention to the pressure valves. You’ll have to take a closer look at the water heaters so that you aren’t caught off-guard if something happens — such as the tank bursting or leaking. Be careful as you pull on the lever, and if something isn’t right, then it is time to call a plumber you know will do the best job possible to guarantee that your home and family are kept safe from plumbing mishaps!
